A ruptured intervertebral disc, commonly referred to as a herniated disc, can occur anywhere along the spine and can cause intense pain and discomfort. There are several other terms that can be used to describe a ruptured intervertebral disc, including a slipped disc, bulging disc, or a prolapsed disc. These terms are used to describe the same condition, where the soft tissue inside the disc bulges out, putting pressure on nearby nerves. Other related conditions include degenerative disc disease, where the disc naturally wears down over time, and a pinched nerve, where the disc compresses a nerve running nearby. Treatment options include physical therapy, medication, and in severe cases, surgery.
