The term "salt mines" can also be referred to as saltworks, salt pans, salt fields, or salt beds. These synonyms describe different manners in which salt is extracted from the earth. Saltworks were traditionally found along coastal areas, where saltwater would be collected and evaporated to leave the salt behind. Salt pans are shallow pools of water where the same process occurs. Salt fields and salt beds, however, refer to deposits of salt found underground which can be mined similarly to coal or other minerals. While the terminology may differ, the end result remains the same - the valuable mineral that is salt.
