A sand bunker is a popular term used in golf courses to describe a depression or pit filled with sand. However, there are various other terms used in golf and other industries to refer to this feature. Some of these synonyms for sand bunker are sand trap, sand hole, trap, sand box, bunker, or simply sand pit. In recent times, golf course designers have also included newer terms for these features, such as waste area or natural area. In construction, a similar structure may be called a ditch or excavation. Regardless of the name, the purpose of these features remains the same, to increase the challenge and add excitement to the game or project at hand.
