A sheepshank is a type of knot used for shortening a rope or taking up slack. It is also known as a sheepshank knot, but there are a number of synonyms for this versatile knot. These include the slip sheepshank, the double twisted sheepshank, the common sheepshank and the midshipman's hitch. All of these terms refer to the same fundamental knot, which is created by folding the rope in half and then tying two half knots at either end of the folded section.
