A silencer is a device used to reduce the noise emitted by a firearm. However, it may also be referred to by other names. For instance, a suppressor is a synonyms for silencer. Likewise, a muffler, diffuser, or moderator is commonly used to describe this device. In the military, the term sound suppressors is also used. Police officers may also brand them as can, due to its cylindrical shape. Similarly, in Australia, they are called baffle and in the UK, gun flashes are often called moderators, while silencer is used to describe far less effective devices. Different words are used to indicate the same function, but they all serve the same purpose of reducing sound levels from firearms.
