Spanish Sahara was a former Spanish colony located in Western Sahara, which was officially known as the Spanish Sahara Province. The territory was under Spanish control from 1884 until 1975, when it was ceded to Morocco and Mauritania. Today, it is recognized as a disputed territory, with its status remaining unresolved. Synonyms for Spanish Sahara include Rio de Oro, a region in the southern part of the territory; Spanish West Africa, a term used to refer to all of Spain's African colonies; and Western Sahara, the modern name for the disputed region. Other alternative names include Saguia el-Hamra and Saharan Spain.
