Spirula, a genus of deep-sea squid characterized by its unique coiled shell, also goes by several synonyms. These include Planispirula, Nautilus spirula, and Ammonites spirula, as its shell is reminiscent of the nautilus and ammonite. Other similar names used are Volutospirula and Eolipile spirula. The term "Spirulida," however, is used to refer to a different group of organisms - a class of primitive snails that possess a spiral shell. Although Spirula is a unique and fascinating animal, its varied synonyms remind us of the importance of language and the diverse ways in which scientific names can be used to describe an organism.
