Spizella is a genus of small passerine birds that belong to the family Emberizidae. These birds are commonly known as sparrows due to their physical resemblance to members of the genus Passer. There are five species of Spizella that are recognized by ornithologists. They are the Chipping Sparrow, Clay-colored Sparrow, Brewer's Sparrow, Field Sparrow, and the American Tree Sparrow. Some popular synonyms for Spizella include Finch, Bunting, and Lark. These words are often used interchangeably to describe different species of small birds that share similar physical characteristics as the Spizella genus. Regardless of what they are called, these feathered friends are a delight to observe in the wild.
