St. Mark, one of the four evangelists, is often referred to by his name or as "Mark," but there are also other synonyms used to describe him. He is often called "John Mark," which is a combination of his given name and that of his mother, Mary. Additionally, he is sometimes referred to as "the companion of Paul," as Mark was a follower of Paul during his ministry. He is also sometimes called "the author of the Gospel of Mark," as he is traditionally believed to have written this Gospel. Finally, St. Mark is sometimes designated as "the patron saint of Venice," a title he earned due to the tradition of his relics being brought to the city in the 9th century.
