St. Matthew the Apostle is also known as Levi. He was one of Jesus' twelve apostles and is most famous for being the author of the Gospel according to Matthew. In addition to being referred to as the Apostle Matthew, he is also known as Matthew the Evangelist and St. Matthew. In some traditions, such as the Eastern Orthodox Church, he is referred to as the Holy Apostle and Evangelist Matthew. Other synonyms for St. Matthew the Apostle include Matthew the Publican, Matthew the Tax Collector, and the Apostle of the Hebrews. Regardless of the name used, St. Matthew the Apostle remains an important figure in the Christian faith and is celebrated on his feast day of September 21st.
