Stegomyia is a genus of mosquito species belonging to the family Culicidae. It is primarily associated with transmitting diseases such as dengue fever, Zika virus, and chikungunya. Though the name "Stegomyia" is commonly used for this genus, it is also known by several synonyms. These include Aëdes, Diceromyia, and Finlaya. Aëdes is a commonly used synonym that is derived from the Greek word "aedis" which means "temple." Diceromyia is another synonym that was used earlier for the mosquito species and is believed to have originated from the Greek word "dikera" or "two horns." Finlaya is also a synonym for Stegomyia species and is named after a famous physician and epidemiologist named Carlos Finlay.
