Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis (SSPE) is a rare and fatal viral disease that affects the central nervous system. Some synonyms for this condition include subacute measles encephalitis, progressive measles encephalitis, delayed measles encephalopathy, and Leigh disease with SSPE. Although it is caused by the measles virus, it usually appears several years after a person has recovered from measles. Symptoms include behavioral changes, seizures, and loss of motor skills. Sadly, there is currently no cure for SSPE and treatment mainly focuses on managing symptoms. Prevention of SSPE involves getting vaccinated against measles, which can significantly reduce the risk of developing this devastating disease.
