Tamarau is a critically endangered species of buffalo that is native to the Philippines. It is also known by various other names such as Mindoro dwarf buffalo, Timarau, Anoa Mindorii, and Mindoro buffalo. The Tamarau stands at around 1m tall, with a stocky build and short legs. It has a dark coat and curved horns. Due to hunting and habitat loss, its numbers have greatly decreased, and it is estimated that there are less than 300 individuals left in the wild. The Tamarau is an important cultural symbol for the Tagbanwa and Iraya Mangyan indigenous communities, who have worked to protect it from extinction.
