Tegmentum is a term which specifically refers to the dorsal (upper) part of the midbrain. This area has a number of important functions, including playing a role in the visual and auditory systems, and regulating motor functions. There are a number of other terms which can be used to describe this area of the brain, including the tectum, the optic tectum, and the quadrigeminal plate. Additionally, some researchers may use the term "midbrain tegmentum" to describe this region in particular. No matter which synonym is used, however, it is important to understand the vital functions that this area of the brain plays in a range of physiological processes.
