Thamnophis Sirtalis, commonly known as the Eastern garter snake is a non-venomous snake species found in North America. It is also known by a variety of other names such as the common garter snake, garden snake, ribbon snake, and striped snake. The name 'garter' comes from the old-fashioned name for a piece of cloth used to hold up stockings. The Eastern garter snake is characterized by its long and slender body with three stripes running down the length of its body, and its distinct coloring which can range from green to brown and even black. These snakes play an important role in their ecosystem by controlling rodent populations and serving as prey for other animals.
