A thyroid nodule is a small growth or lump that appears on the thyroid gland. It is a common condition that affects both men and women but is more prevalent in women. Other synonyms for thyroid nodule include thyroid lump, thyroid cyst, thyroid adenoma, thyroid tumor, and thyroid mass. A thyroid lump can be noncancerous, also known as a benign nodule, or cancerous, also called a malignant nodule. Not all thyroid nodules require treatment, but they should be evaluated by a healthcare professional to determine if further action is necessary. Symptoms of thyroid nodules can include difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, and a noticeable lump in the neck.
