A traffic circle, also known as a roundabout, is a circular intersection designed to manage the flow of vehicular traffic. Other synonyms for traffic circle include rotary, traffic island, circle, and roundabout. Rotaries are commonly used in Europe and the Northeastern United States. Traffic islands are usually smaller than rotaries and are found at intersections of streets or highways. Circles are frequently used in the Midwest and Western United States and are typically larger than rotaries and traffic islands. Finally, roundabouts are becoming more common in the United States and are often designed with a central island and one or two lanes of traffic that permit vehicles to enter and exit the circle without stopping.
