Transcriptional gene silencing is a process in which the expression of a gene is suppressed. There are several synonyms for transcriptional gene silencing. One of the most commonly used terms is "epigenetic gene silencing," which refers to the process of gene expression being modified through chemical changes to DNA or its associated proteins. Another synonym for this process is "gene repression," which is the process by which the transcription of a gene is stopped altogether. Additional synonyms include "off-target gene silencing," which refers to gene silencing caused by unintended effects of RNA interference, and "RNAi-mediated gene silencing," which involves the degradation of mRNA molecules to prevent their translation into proteins.
