Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty is a medical term that refers to a surgical procedure that's conducted to reduce the size of the uvula, soft palate and pharynx. It's used to treat people suffering from snoring or sleep apnea. A few alternative terms that can be used to describe uvulopalatopharyngoplasty include UPPP, laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP), and pharyngoplasty. Other less technical terms for uvulopalatopharyngoplasty include uvula removal, palate surgery, or throat surgery. Some patients may even refer to it jokingly as a 'nose job for your throat'. No matter what it's called, uvulopalatopharyngoplasty can greatly improve a person's quality of life by reducing snoring and ensuring a better night's sleep.
