The vena cava is a large vein that carries deoxygenated blood from the body's lower and upper extremities to the heart's right atrium. There are two main synonyms for the vena cava: superior vena cava and inferior vena cava. The superior vena cava carries deoxygenated blood from the upper part of the body -- arms, neck, and head -- and goes directly to the right atrium. The inferior vena cava, on the other hand, collects blood from the lower part of the body -- legs, abdomen, and pelvis -- and also delivers it to the right atrium. Both vena cavae play an important role in transporting the blood to the heart, and any dysfunction in either of these veins can have serious consequences on the body.
