Other synonyms for Virginia opossum include the North American opossum, white-nosed opossum, and common opossum. The name opossum comes from the Powhatan word "apassum," which means "white animal." The Virginia opossum is known for its unique defense mechanism of playing dead, or "playing possum," when threatened. It is also a nocturnal animal, primarily feeding on insects, fruit, and carrion.
