Western chimpanzee, also known as the West African chimpanzee, is a hominid species that belongs to the genus Pan. It is one of four subspecies of the common chimpanzee found in the forests and savannahs of West Africa, particularly in Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. However, this species is sometimes referred to with different synonyms, including Pan troglodytes verus, Pan verus, or even simply West chimp. Additionally, since the chimps of West Africa are only genetically distinguishable from their East African counterparts by a small amount, some scientists consider them to be a subspecies or strain of the common chimpanzee or a separate species altogether.
