Woodlice are known by a variety of synonyms depending on the region and context. In the UK they are often called 'pill bugs' or 'sow bugs' and in the US they are commonly referred to as 'roly-polies' or 'doodlebugs'. They are also known as 'armadillo bugs' due to their resemblance to the small mammals. Other synonyms include 'potato bugs', 'slaters', 'chiggy-wigs' and 'cheesy bugs'. Woodlice are crustaceans and are not actually insects, so they are sometimes called 'land shrimp'. They are also called 'cellar dwellers' as they are often found in dark, damp areas like cellars. Regardless of their name, woodlice play an important role in decomposing dead wood and other organic matter.
