Zeaxanthin is a carotenoid, a pigment that is found in many plants and some animals. It is known to be a powerful antioxidant that can help protect the body against damage from free radicals. Some synonyms for zeaxanthin include lutein, neoxanthin, violaxanthin, and astaxanthin. These compounds are all structurally similar to zeaxanthin and are found in a variety of foods, such as dark leafy greens, yellow and orange fruits and vegetables, and seafood. Like zeaxanthin, they are believed to have antioxidant properties and may have other health benefits as well. While these compounds are not exactly the same as zeaxanthin, they are often used interchangeably in research studies and dietary supplements.
