Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a hereditary disorder that causes the growth of numerous cysts in the kidneys. Some synonyms for ADPKD include polycystic kidney disease, PKD, autosomal dominant polycystic disease, and polycystic kidney disorder. ADPKD is one of the most common genetic disorders affecting the kidneys, and can lead to various complications such as high blood pressure, kidney failure, and cyst infections. Although there is currently no cure for ADPKD, management including medication and lifestyle changes can help slow down the progression of the disease and alleviate some of its symptoms. Genetic testing and counseling are also recommended for individuals with a family history of ADPKD.
