Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, also known as ADPKD, is a genetic disorder that causes cysts to form in the kidneys. While ADPKD is the commonly used term, there are other words used to describe this condition. For example, some medical professionals refer to it as adult polycystic kidney disease, since symptoms usually present in adults. Other synonyms include familial cystic renal disease, polycystic kidney disease type 1, and PKD1. These synonyms all describe the same condition, which is caused by a mutation in genes that control the growth and development of kidney cells. Although there is currently no cure for ADPKD, various treatments are available to manage symptoms and slow its progression.
