American Holly, also known as Ilex opaca, has several common names in addition to its scientific name. One of the most common is the Christmas Holly, as the plant's bright red berries and shiny, dark green leaves have long been used in holiday decorations. Other synonyms include the White Holly, Prickly Holly, and Inkberry Holly. The White Holly moniker references the plant's distinctive white bark, while Prickly Holly acknowledges the plant's pointed leaves. The Inkberry Holly only adds to the confusion as this term is also used to describe a different species of holly called Ilex glabra. Whatever the name, though, this evergreen shrub is beloved for its beauty and resilience.
