The Asian black bear, also known as the moon bear, is a species of bear native to the forests of Asia. In various parts of the world, the Asian black bear is also known by different local names such as Himalayan black bear, Tibetan black bear, Japanese black bear, Formosan black bear, and Iranian black bear. These names reflect the bear's distribution across a vast region of Asia and different physical features of the subspecies. The Asian black bear is known for its distinctive V-shaped patch on their chest, its glossy black coat, and a distinctive crescent-shaped patch of white fur on the chest. Despite its numerous names, the conservation status of the Asian black bear remains vulnerable due to illegal poaching and habitat destruction.
