The purple loco, astragalus mollissimus, is common in Texas and the adjoining States and extends north as far as Nebraska and Colorado.

Dr. Thomson informs me that a species of astragalus is used in western Tibet for this purpose, the whole shrub, which is dwarf, being reduced to pulp.
