Autostrada is the Italian term for a major high-speed highway or motorway. In other countries, these highways have varying names such as freeway, expressway, or autobahn. In Spain, the term is autopista while in France, they call them autoroutes. In Portugal, it is known as autoestrada. In the United Kingdom, the M and A roads are the equivalent of motorways. In the United States, highways such as Interstate 90 or Interstate 95 are considered major highways. Synonyms for autostrada, therefore, vary from one country to another, but all refer to the same type of road designed for high-speed travel.
