The Battle of the Aisne was a major conflict of World War I, fought along the Aisne River in France. Known for its fierce fighting and high casualties, the Battle of the Aisne is also referred to as the Aisne Offensive or the Second Battle of the Aisne. Other synonyms include the Nivelle Offensive, named after French commander Robert Nivelle, and the Chemin des Dames Offensive, named after the strategically important road that ran through the fighting area. Although the battle ultimately resulted in a stalemate, it was a significant event in the war and marked a turning point in the fighting tactics used by both sides.
