The Battle of the Chemin-des-Dames, also known as the Nivelle Offensive, was a World War I battle fought between French and German forces along the Chemin-des-Dames ridge in northeastern France. This battle is also referred to as the Second Battle of the Aisne. Another synonym for this battle is the Spring Offensive of 1917. The battle was a major turning point in the war, resulting in heavy casualties on both sides. It is remembered as one of the deadliest battles of the war and a symbol of the futility of trench warfare. The battle was named after the road that runs across the ridge.
