The Battle of the Little Bighorn, one of the most well-known conflicts of the American Indian Wars, is often referred to by a number of synonyms. The most common alternative name is the Custer Massacre, named after U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer who died during the battle. Other names include the Battle of Greasy Grass, a literal translation of the name given to the area by the Lakota Sioux people, and the Battle of the Greasy Grass River. The event is also sometimes called the Battle of the Yellowstone, after the nearby river. Regardless of the name used, the Battle of the Little Bighorn remains a significant moment in Native American history and the larger story of westward expansion in the United States.
