The California Bay Tree is sometimes referred to as the California Laurel, Oregon myrtle, or pepperwood tree. Although it was initially found primarily in California, the tree has since spread to other regions, including Oregon. This evergreen tree often grows up to 80 feet tall, with waxy leaves that have a distinct aroma reminiscent of cloves or cinnamon. The tree also produces small, blackish berries. Its wood is often used to make furniture and decorative items, while its leaves are commonly used as a spice in cooking. Regardless of what it is called, the California Bay Tree remains an essential part of the Western U.S. landscape and economy.
