Carbon dating is a method of determining the age of an object containing organic material by measuring the amount of carbon-14 it contains. However, there are several other terms that are often used as synonyms for carbon dating. These include radiocarbon dating, carbon-14 dating, and simply carbon dating. Additionally, the term radiometric dating is often used to encompass all methods of dating using radioactive isotopes, including carbon dating. Other related terms include dendrochronology, which involves dating wood using tree rings, and varve chronology, which uses annual sediment layers to date geological events. Despite these different names, carbon dating continues to be one of the most widely used methods of dating archaeological and geological specimens.
