Chabad is a Hebrew acronym derived from the words "חכמה", "בינה", "דעת" which represent wisdom, understanding, and knowledge. It is a popular movement within Hasidic Judaism which emphasizes outreach and education. There are several synonyms for the word "Chabad," including the Lubavitch movement, Chabad-Lubavitch, or simply Lubavitch. Lubavitch refers to the town in Belarus where the movement originated. It is also known as Habad in Israel and Europe. The word "Chabad" is often used interchangeably with "Hasidim," which refers to a broader group of ultra-Orthodox Jews who follow the teachings of the Baal Shem Tov.
