Crowberry is a subsection of the heath family, with botanical name Empetrum. Although crowberry is the most popular term used in identifying this flowering plant species, it has some excellent synonyms worth exploring. Some of the synonyms are heather berry, crakeberry, blackfruit, mountain smoke, and ivyberry. Crowberries are typically dark purple in color, small and round with a slightly salty taste. They grow in harsh, arctic-like environments and have a small level of sugar. Some species of animal such as reindeer enjoy feeding on this berry. Despite the different names used to identify these plants, the essence and attributes of this berry remain the same.
