DHA crystalline nephropathy is a rare kidney disease caused by the accumulation of Dihydroxyanthracene (DHA) crystals in the renal tubules. Synonyms for this condition include DHA crystal-induced nephropathy, DHA nephropathy, anthracene nephropathy, and casanthranol-induced nephropathy. While the exact prevalence of this disease is unknown, it has been reported in patients taking certain laxatives containing casanthranol and related compounds. Symptoms of DHA crystalline nephropathy may include kidney dysfunction, proteinuria, and hematuria. Treatment options include discontinuation of the offending laxative, supportive care, and dialysis if necessary. Early diagnosis and intervention may prevent or delay the progression of kidney damage.
