When trying to deflect or distract from a particular issue or situation, individuals or organizations may use what is commonly known as a "diversionary tactic." However, there are several synonyms that can be used to describe this type of behavior. Some examples include: red herring, smokescreen, decoy, misdirection, deflection, distraction, and sleight of hand. Each of these terms is used to describe the act of redirecting attention away from the original subject or point of contention. While diversionary tactics can be effective in certain situations, they can also be seen as manipulative or disingenuous.
