Dried heave is a medical term used to describe the involuntary contractions of the abdominal muscles and diaphragm when there is no vomit or contents in the stomach to throw up. Some of the synonyms used for dried heave include retching, gagging, heaving, and convulsing. These terms are all descriptive of the same condition in which the body goes through the motions of vomiting without actually discharging anything from the body. Dried heaves are often associated with hangovers, stomach flu, food poisoning, or other conditions that cause stomach upset. Although not usually dangerous, they can be uncomfortable and unpleasant.
