The Elaeocarpus family is a group of trees and shrubs, mainly found in Asia and Australasia. They are esteemed for their ornamental value, and are planted in parks and gardens across the world. The family is commonly referred to as the Blueberry family, due to the similarity in appearance of the fruit. Another synonym for Elaeocarpus family is the Olive family, as their leaves resemble those of olive trees. They are also known as the Quandong family because of the fruit of some species; the Java Plum family, for the fruit of one species; and the Rudraksha family, after the beads made from the fruit of some species, which are used in Hindu religious practices.
