Family Diodontidae, commonly known as the porcupinefish family, consists of around 22 species of fish found in warm and tropical waters around the world. These fish are easily recognized by their spiky, external spines and their unique ability to inflate themselves to make themselves difficult to prey upon. They are commonly referred to as balloonfish, globefish, swellfish, and pufferfish. Porcupinefish are popular in the aquarium trade because of their striking appearance, and are often used in traditional medicine for their supposed healing properties. Despite their popularity, however, porcupinefish are becoming increasingly threatened by overfishing, habitat destruction, and pollution.
