The family Phalaropidae comprises a group of wading birds that are commonly referred to as phalaropes. There are three species of phalaropes: Red-necked Phalarope, Red Phalarope, and Wilson's Phalarope, all of which are found in North America. These birds are known for their unique behavior of rotating in circles on the water surface while feeding. They have a distinctive bill that is adapted for aquatic feeding, and their plumage is highly variable depending on sex and season. Other synonyms for the family Phalaropidae include simply "phalaropes," as well as "seaweed birds" due to their close association with floating seaweed mats where they feed.
