A feedlot also known as a stockyard is a confined area used for the management and feeding of livestock. Oftentimes, the term is used interchangeably with the words "confinement farm" or "CAFO" which stands for concentrated animal feeding operation. Other synonyms for a feedlot include feed yard, fattening lot, bull pen or cattle yard. In different parts of the world, feedlots may also be referred to as feed paddocks, cattle stations, meat processing plants or meat packing plants. The primary objective of a feedlot is to provide a cost-effective way of fattening animals to increase their weight and meat yield before they are sent to slaughter.
