Galactorrhea is a medical condition characterized by persistent and sometimes excessive production of breast milk, unrelated to normal lactation. It is also known as lactation outside pregnancy, hyperlactation, or milk discharge. Women suffering from galactorrhea may experience nipple discharge, breast tenderness, irregular menstrual cycles, and decreased libido. Some synonyms for galactorrhea include hyperprolactinemia, galactopoiesis, and lactational adenoma. Hyperprolactinemia refers to the elevated levels of prolactin hormone, which stimulates milk production in the mammary glands. Galactopoiesis is the physiological process of milk synthesis and secretion in lactating organisms. Lactational adenomas are benign tumors that can cause excessive prolactin production and galactorrhea.
