Genus Galeorhinus refers to a specific group of sharks known as the school sharks due to their tendency to swim in large groups. Some of the synonyms used to refer to the Galeorhinus genus include gulper shark and tope shark, while in South Africa, they are commonly referred to as soupfin sharks. These sharks have a number of distinguishing characteristics such as a flattened snout and a generally greyish coloration. Despite their intimidating appearance, they pose little threat to humans and are mainly caught for their high-quality meat and liver oil. The Galeorhinus genus is found in temperate and tropical waters worldwide, inhabiting depths of up to 400 meters.
