Genus Gambusia is a type of freshwater fish that belongs to the Poeciliidae family. Known for their ability to control mosquito populations, these fish are commonly referred to as mosquito fish. There are other synonyms for the Genus Gambusia, including the eastern mosquitofish, western mosquitofish, topminnow, and Gambusia minnow. These fish are native to North and Central America, but have been introduced to other regions as a biological control agent for mosquito populations. Despite their effectiveness in controlling mosquitos, Gambusia have also been known to negatively impact native fish populations. Nonetheless, they remain a popular choice for mosquito control in many areas.
