Growth-onset diabetes is a term used to describe diabetes that develops during childhood or adolescence and has a different presentation than type 1 or type 2 diabetes. This rare form of diabetes is also known as type 1.5 diabetes, latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA), or fulminant diabetes. LADA and fulminant diabetes both have rapid onset and severe symptoms, while type 1.5 diabetes presents with a slow progression similar to type 2 diabetes. Other terms used for growth-onset diabetes are double diabetes, hybrid diabetes, and slowly progressive autoimmune diabetes of adulthood (SPADA). While these terms may have slight differences in meaning, they all refer to a form of diabetes that does not fit cleanly into the categories of type 1 or type 2.
