IDDM or Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that occurs when the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin to regulate blood sugar. There are several synonyms for IDDM, including Type 1 diabetes, Juvenile-onset diabetes, and childhood diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is commonly referred to as IDDM because it requires insulin therapy as it affects young adults and adolescents. The term Juvenile-onset diabetes originated because it typically affects children and young adults. Childhood diabetes is another term used to describe IDDM, highlighting the condition's early onset and lifetime impact. While these synonyms are somewhat interchangeable, they all describe the same condition and require lifelong management.
