Honey bees, also known as Apis mellifera, are key pollinators for many of the foods we eat. They create honey by collecting nectar from flowers, and their hives are home to thousands of individual bees. There are several synonyms for the term honey bee, including the common honeybee, or simply bee. In addition, other common synonyms include the European honey bee, Italian honey bee, Western honey bee, and honey-making bee. Despite their small size, honey bees play a big role in our ecosystem and help to support agriculture and maintain healthy plant populations.
